Multi-hazard resistant steel plate shear wall bridge pier concept

چکیده
Bridges are built in a variety of locations, many of which are susceptible to multiple extreme hazards (earthquakes, vehicle collisions, tsunamis or storm surges, and blasts are considered in this research since they are present as a minimum for some locations). This underscores the need to develop an innovative design concept for bridges from a multi-hazard perspective in which all hazards and their sometimes conflicting design solutions are considered from the onset. This is done here, focusing on a multi-hazard resistant pier composed of steel plate shear walls. Following the development and design of a Steel Plate Shear Wall (SPSW) box pier concept that considered each hazard by use of simplified analyses, advanced nonlinear finite element analyses were conducted to verify and validate its behavior. The proposed SPSW box pier system has adequate ductile performance and strength for each of the hazards considered in this research.

Multi-hazard (blast, Seismic, Tsunamis, Collision) Resistant Bridge Piers
Bridges are often built in locations susceptible to multiple extreme hazards. Meeting some or all of these constraints drives the development of innovative multi-hazard design concepts. This paper presents the results of research conducted to develop and experimentally validate such multi-hazard bridge pier concepts. The first concept is a pier-bent made of concrete filled steel tube columns. F...

This paper presents the development and experimental validation of a multi-hazard bridge pier concept, i.e., a bridge pier system capable of providing an adequate level of protection against collapse under seismic and blast loading. A multi-column pier-bent with concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns is the proposed concept, and the adequacy of this system is experimentally and analytically ...

Steel Plate Shear Wall (SPSW) is an emerging seismic load-resistant system that, compared to other systems, enjoys the advantages of stable ductile behavior, fewer detailing requirements, rapid constructability, and economy. American seismic provisions decree that a SPSW should be designed as a moment frame with a web infill plate. Specifically, in case of buildings taller than 160 ft, it decre...

The concept of designing sacrificial elements to dissipate seismic energy while preserving the integrity of the structure’s other main components is known as the structural fuse concept. Few implementations of the structural fuse concept have been rigorous in emphasizing easy and complete replaceability of the sacrificial elements and absence of damage to the primary load-resisting structural s...
متن کاملBridge Piers with Structural Fuses and Bi-Steel Columns. I: Experimental Testing
Structural fuses, easily replaceable sacrificial elements to dissipate seismic energy while preventing damage to the gravity loadresisting structural system, are proposed as part of a multicolumn accelerated bridge construction (ABC) pier concept. Different types of structural fuses are investigated to compare the effect of each on ABC bridge bents. The piers of a three span-continuous bridge p...
